Needle valves are commonly used in flow metering applications, especially when a constant, calibrated low flow rate must be maintained for a period of time.It uses a blunt, tapered needle, but it rests on a square-edged seat rather than a matching taper. The object here is to obtain a well-defined seat between two narrow mating surfaces that will securely shut off the flow by only a slight floating pressure. Needle valves are also commonly used in anhydrous ammonia (NH3) applications to shut off pressure gauges or applicators to shut off the NH3 supply to the tool.
Needle valves are not used for simple shutoff applications due to low flow rates and the need to turn the stem several times to fully open or close. Due to the small orifice and the high force advantage of the fine threaded stem, needle valves are usually easy to close completely, requiring only hand tightening. Needle valve spindles and/or seats, especially those made of brass, are easily damaged by excessive rotational forces when shutting off flow. Small, simple needle valves are often used as bleeder valves in water heating applications. Unlike ball valves or valves with a rising stem, it is difficult to tell if the valve is open or closed by examining the handle position.
