Needle valves use a tapered pin to gradually open the space for fine control of flow. A spindle can be used to control and regulate flow. Needle valves have a relatively small orifice with a long, tapered seat, and a needle-shaped plunger at the end of the screw that fits perfectly into the seat. As the screw turns and the plunger retracts, flow between the seat and plunger is possible; however, fluid flow is significantly impeded until the plunger is fully retracted. Since the fine threads require many turns to retract the plunger, flow can be easily and precisely regulated.
